Technology is changing the way older adults manage their daily lives — Edgewood residents included. With the advent of smart tech to seniors, and our early adoption of technology that enhances the community and makes it more secure for our residents, we’ve seen firsthand the role smart tech for seniors plays in empowering older adults to maintain as much of their independence as possible.
With each innovation comes new ways for members of our community to benefit from increased ease of living and up-to-the-minute reports on their health. In this post, our team shines the spotlight on some of the most prominent technological additions at Edgewood.
Tech Makes Edgewood Safer, Healthier and Smarter
Below, you’ll find more information about smart tech for seniors and how these innovations have transformed the Edgewood community.
Our team receives daily reports on changes in all our residents’ health thanks to in-home sensors that conduct wellness checks on each home’s tenant(s) each day. The sensors learn to detect any irregularities in the home and alert the team at The Meadows —our on-site Health Center — so that they can follow up with the resident.
Personal Emergency Response System (PERS)
Every Edgewood resident through all levels of care has his or her own personal emergency response system. These life-saving devices are available in various wearable forms, such as necklaces and bracelets, and allow members of the community to ring for help from our medical services team immediately following a fall or other injury.
Key Fob Entry System
Our residents’ safety is of the utmost importance to us. As such, our buildings’ entrances remain secure at all times and can only be entered using a key fob. With this system in place, each community entrance contains a small security device that grants access inside the building. To enter, a resident must hold their key up to the device which will then open the door once the key has been authenticated. The community is much safer with only Edgewood residents and team members having the ability to open doors.
Electronic Medical Records
Our community’s adoption of electronic medical records many years ago has enabled more effortless record transfer between our residents’ caregivers and has eliminated the possibilities of transcribed errors, misplaced files and other unwanted occurrences. Resident privacy is also enhanced thanks to restraints limiting the number of people who can access certain records.
Edgewood Residents Are Embracing Smart Tech on Their Own!
In addition to the smart tech for seniors installed in the community, many of our residents have their own smart devices that enhance their lives in a variety of ways.
Smartphones, Laptops and Tablets
Long-distance communication has never been easier. Gadgets such as smart phones, laptops and tablets have become a part of everyday life for all age groups and have made it so that our residents can hear and see their loved ones at any time, no matter how far away they are.
Alexa, Siri, Cortana — you may have heard of them. Our residents sure have. They’re the virtual assistants who make life easier for millions of people. Whether enlisting help using a smartphone or specialized devices like the Amazon Echo, virtual assistants are there to answer our residents’ most pressing questions, inform them of the weather, tell them how much traffic there is, play their favorite songs and so much more.
Why should you vacuum or mop when you can have a robot do it for you? Some members of the community us their smartphones to control robotic cleaners and even schedule them to take care of light carpet and surface cleaning.
