You can’t do much carpentry with your bare hands and you can’t do much thinking with your bare brain. You need tools, and words are the best thinking tools ever invented — except nobody invented language. Language evolved, but not mainly by genetic evolution. It evolved by cultural evolution: evolution without genes, a very similar process to natural selection.

Professor Dennett is a longtime resident of North Andover and one of the three University Professors at Tufts, where he has taught since 1971. Author of more than a dozen books, all still in print, including, most recently, FROM BACTERIA TO BACH AND BACK: THE EVOLUTION OF MINDS.
