This presentation will deal with why young men went to sea, diversity of whaling crews and prospects for people of color. Also, the different jobs on a whaleship, method of payment, living conditions– including the work, discipline, dress, health conditions, and food. Mr. Martin will explain the dangers of whaling, entertainments, and attitudes toward women. After retirement from 38 years teaching Political Science at Merrimack College, Curtis Martin, Lecturer on American Whaling, pursued his life-long passion for whales and whaling. He will share his excitement about the whaling industry and promote a wider knowledge of this important piece of New England history.
