Sustainability starts at home with Edgewood’s Environment Committee.

Community Life, Edgewood News, Resident Stories

Anyone who knows Edgewood knows what a beautiful place it is. So it’s not surprising residents want to do everything they can to protect and preserve it. The Environment Committee (EC) is a resident-led group dedicated to advancing environmental sustainability across our community. In the face of climate change and biodiversity loss, the EC advises management and inspires fellow residents to make choices that protect our planet for future generations.

Guided by the principle that “we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children,” the EC brings together residents with backgrounds in business, forestry, education, science, law, and engineering. Their shared passion for nature — whether through birdwatching, photography, or advocacy — fuels their commitment to meaningful change.

The EC works in collaboration with Edgewood’s executive director, environmental services, maintenance, and culinary teams. Monthly meetings are a hub of ideas for sustainable actions that touch every corner of operations — from lighting and water use to dining and habitat preservation.

Key initiatives include:

  • Promoting solar and renewable energy
  • Supporting local agriculture and plant-based dining
  • Reducing and recycling food waste, paper, plastics, textiles, and electronics
  • Planting native “keystone” species on our campus to support local wildlife
  • Advocating for humane rodent control methods

Recently, EC members toured the Greater Lawrence Sanitary District’s Wastewater Treatment Plant to explore anaerobic digestion — a promising alternative to composting. Past events include “Tastings for a Small Planet,” an Earth Day collaboration with the Food & Beverage and Health Committees where residents enjoyed delicious plant-based dishes while learning how their plates impact the planet.

Edgewood’s sustainability journey is ongoing, and the EC welcomes all residents to get involved. Together, we’re building a healthier home and supporting a healthier planet.
