SMALL-HOME ASSISTED LIVING AND MEMORY SUPPORT | NORTH ANDOVER, MA

An innovative place to live — and to thrive.

The Woodlands Inn is a welcome alternative to traditional, and often clinical, assisted living and memory support care centers. Located on Edgewood’s campus in North Andover, Massachusetts and designed to resemble a charming New England Inn, each of our four state-of-the-art, specialized homes accommodates just ten resident members. Specifically designed for those who need assistance with daily living, the intimate size of our households supports residents’ maximum independence while also fostering social interaction and friendship.

Dedicated Innkeepers get to know each resident personally — their history and routines, their personality and interests, how they like to spend their days, and the specific types of care and assistance they need and want. Because of this personalized approach, each resident receives just the right assistance to help them regain a sense of autonomy and purpose they may have lost while trying to manage living on their own.

“At The Woodlands Inn, my mother enjoys life on her terms. She is always encouraged to do as much for herself as she wishes. We feel secure in the fact that she’s so well cared for every day.”

Assisted living

Assisted Living

Assistance that empowers independence.

Assisted living at The Woodlands Inn is designed to empower residents to maintain as much independence and autonomy as they choose. A detailed, individualized plan of care is created for each resident based on their needs and preferences. This may include help with personal tasks such as bathing, dressing and grooming, bathroom assistance, medication reminders, moving into or out of a chair or bed, and more.

Weekly housekeeping and laundry service are provided although, as with most things at The Woodlands Inn, residents who enjoy doing their own laundry have the freedom to do so. Surrounded by friends — and with the knowledge that a caring, helping hand is always available — residents feel empowered to move past their limitations and safely embrace their highest level of independence. This restores a priceless sense of confidence and security that helps residents thrive.

memory care

MEMORY SUPPORT

Specialized, compassionate care.

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia is never easy. What’s even harder is making the decision to have someone else care for them. It’s important to know they’ll be in good hands. Edgewood is New England’s only Hearthstone-certified Center of Excellence and every member of our team receives Hearthstone training to learn the latest techniques in communicating with and caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia or memory impairment.

In The Woodlands Inn memory support households, our goal is to make every interaction a positive one that honors each resident’s history with the compassion and dignity they deserve. Our small-home model eliminates long hallways and other obstacles, so residents can move about independently with access to amenities including an outdoor garden courtyard. As in our assisted living homes, memory support residents can take on daily tasks as they choose and are able.

The small home model

OUR INNOVATIVE SMALL-HOME MODEL

Fostering connection, independence, and security.

The Woodlands Inn is likely very different from traditional assisted living or memory support care centers you may be used to. Daily life centers around a central hearth area where residents enjoy engaging in conversation, watching movies together, participating in a variety of interesting programs, or simply basking in the warmth of the fire on a chilly day. The open kitchen and dining area is also a center of activity where residents can gather for meals, or even help with preparation if they choose. Large windows bathe the space in natural light and provide views of each home’s gardens and the beautiful surrounding woodlands.

A large multipurpose room hosts popular mocktail happy hours, celebrations, and programs that bring The Woodlands Inn’s household members together to socialize, learn, and laugh together.

Dedicated Innkeepers

A steady, reliable presence.

Consistent, highly trained teams of Innkeepers are a central feature of the small-home model at The Woodlands Inn. As a steady and reliable presence in members’ lives, Innkeepers serve a variety of roles within the home — from providing personal care and assistance to organizing routines, social events, and recreational opportunities that match residents’ interests, and building a sense of family within the home. They’re also encouragers who empower members to embrace their highest potential for independence.

Resident members and their families can rest easy knowing that their consistent team of Innkeepers and support staff are taking care of the home 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, a licensed nurse provides oversight and assistance eight hours a day.

PRIVATE RESIDENT SUITES

The personal space we all deserve.

Part of remaining independent includes having an inviting space of one’s own. Each assisted living and memory support resident at The Woodlands Inn enjoys a 350-square-foot private master suite with a private bathroom, a spacious closet, and large windows for abundant natural light. Residents can personalize their suites as they choose with their own furnishings and decorations.

Residents’ rooms are arranged around the household’s common spaces, so Innkeepers have a direct view toward each room to help ensure resident safety. To learn more about the features of private suites, visit the Private Suites page on The Woodlands Inn website.

Farm-to-table dining

Meals at The Woodlands Inn are a delight for all the senses and a time for camaraderie and connection. Edgewood’s chef oversees menu selection and meal preparation for each home, incorporating Edgewood’s famous farm-to-table dining philosophy and the same fresh, locally sourced ingredients used in all the dining venues on our campus. Meals are prepared in each home’s open kitchen and residents are welcome to observe or join in the preparation before dining together.

Meals can be personalized to accommodate individual preferences and specific dietary requirements. Residents also enjoy sharing favorite family recipes for our chefs to prepare, bringing back treasured memories and sharing them with their housemates. Special themed meals, holiday feasts and courtyard cookouts add to culinary experience and, with 24/7 access to the kitchen, residents can always find their favorite snacks and beverages — further increasing their autonomy and sense of independence.

Hearthstone

A Hearthstone Center of Excellence

Specialized training for every team member.

Edgewood was the first continuing care retirement community in the nation to receive the Hearthstone Institute’s I’m Still Here® Center of Excellence certification. Every member of the Edgewood team — from management to maintenance — receives Hearthstone training to learn the latest techniques in communicating with and caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia or memory impairment. This means every team member who interacts with your loved one is trained and equipped to ensure a positive experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is assisted living needed?

When you notice someone you love is struggling with some of the basic activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, making meals, or taking medications, it may not be safe for them to continue living on their own. What initially may seem like minor struggles can turn into bigger problems. In this case, it may be time to consider assisted living.

To learn more, read “How to choose assisted living or memory support” on The Woodlands Inn website.

When is memory support appropriate?

Memory support is appropriate for those people in the early- to mid-stages of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. If you have noticed chances in your loved one’s behavior, including disorientation and confusion — and if these changes are creating an unsafe environment for the individual or their caregiver — specialized memory support may be the answer.

To learn more, read “How to choose assisted living or memory support” on The Woodlands Inn website.

Does The Woodlands Inn accept direct admission?

While residents of Edgewood always have priority access to assisted living and memory support at The Woodlands Inn, we also accept new residents through direct admission on a space-available basis.

What if my loved one needs more care than is provided at The Woodlands Inn?

As the Merrimack Valley’s only LifeCare community, Edgewood offers a full continuum of healthcare services — including short-term rehabilitation, advanced memory support, skilled nursing, and hospice care — right here on our campus. It’s an important distinction that means even if your loved one’s needs change, in most cases they’ll still be able to remain in our community.
